The OBIZ wine-estate is situated near Aquileia, in Friuli Venezia Giulia, a small region in the North East of Italy, famous for its quality wines. The lands of OBIZ are part of a small village, in the past known as Lòbiz (Austrian pronunciation) or Lobìs (as pronounced in the Friulian language) and named after Tommaso Obizzi, a banker of Rivo Alto in Venice who was the local landowner in the XVI century. In modern times the old Borgo degli Obizzi has been named Borgo Gortani, after Nicolò Gortani, a landowner of northern Friuli who purchased these lands in 1878. Wine growing in Borgo Gortani has a long tradition: although the first contracts that make explicit reference to it date back to 1728, the discover in the surroundings of Aquileia of wine-amphora dating from the I century BC reveals that the art of wine-making has here a millennium-long tradition. In fact in this area grapevines find a very favourable terroir thanks to a clayey-sandy soil of alluvial origin and the special microclimatic conditions created by the near presence of the Adriatic sea, the Julian Prealps, and a good ventilation all over the year. It is therefore possible to produce here very perfumed white wines and good structured red wines.
In 1997 the young winemaker Yunmani Bergamasco took over the OBIZ wine-estate. From the very beginning he started a process of reorganization in order to increase the quality of his production, investing in the renovation of vineyards, in new equipments for the winery and in barriques of French oak for the wine-cellar, where every year a selection of the best wines goes to age. Since 2004 the wine-cellar is hosted in the old farmhouse situated next to the winery: the house was built in 1718 and has been renovated in 2004 preserving its original architecture.
Nowadays the OBIZ wine-estate counts 25 hectares of vineyard, located all around the winery and mainly cultivated with the Guyot pruning system with a high density of vines per hectare. There are indigenous and international grape varieties, used for producing fresh and fruity wines but also for more structured and full-bodied wines.
